Northern White Rhinos Most Endangered Status: |

There are only 11 Northern White Rhinos known to exist in the world! The Species Survival Plan is trying desperately to save this Rhinoceros sub-species from extinction but time is running out! While other Rhino sub-species seem to have no trouble reproducing in captivity or the wild, researchers are baffled at the inability to get the Northern Whites to reproduce. Cryogenics may be the answer: Since current efforts to breed Northern White Rhinos are failing, zoologists are turning to cryogenics and artificial insemination as the last best hope of saving this sub-species from total extinction at the end of the current generation. The San Diego Wild Animal Park has a male and female Northern White along with Southern White and Black Rhinos. While the Southern and Black Rhinos seem to breed regularly, the park has yet get the male and female Northern rhinos to breed. So the only hope left is collecting and freezing embryos and sperm in hopes that they can somehow breed these rhinos artificially, either by surrogate or perhaps even cloning. Visit the C.R.E.S. (Conservation And Research for Endangered Species) website for more information on the worldwide effort to save the Northern White Rhinos!
